SAN ANTONIO — A group of parents put politics aside to focus on the basics of gun safety.

They came together on San Antonio's North Side Thursday to hear a presentation called “Be Smart” by Moms Demand Action, an organization pushing for common sense gun laws.

Volunteers for the organization say it’s an important conversation to have with kids, much like talking about safety around a swimming pool.

"It's a grassroots, non political organization that's dedicated to fighting for common sense gun laws," Danna Half a volunteer for Moms Demand Action said.

The goal is to chat about something that some would find uncomfortable and to be smart about guns.

"We need to have a conversation about gun safety like we would have a conversation about drunk driving or give a hoot don't pollute," she said.

The group's “Be Smart” program offers tips about securing guns.

"The types of deaths we see in children are 100 percent preventable with responsible gun storage," she said.

With another school shooting sparking debate, Half says just sitting and discussing ways to simply keep kids safe is something everyone can agree with.
