AUSTIN, Texas -- It’s day two of Gov. Greg Abbott’s school safety roundtables. Wednesday’s panel featured advocates both for and against further gun restrictions, mental health experts and lawmakers. Abbott said the goal of the closed door meetings is to come up with ways to curb gun violence in schools. Ed Scruggs with Texas Gun Sense was part of Wednesday’s panel. He joins us live at 7 to discuss what ideas were brought to the table and whether he thinks it’s enough.

With Texas’ Primary runoff races in the rear-view mirror, we now know which major party candidates will be on the ballot this November. At the top of the ticket is the race for U.S. Senate between incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and Democratic Congressman Beto O'Rourke. That contest was decided in March and is considered the marquee race in Texas this election cycle.

Democrat Lupe Valdez secured her party's nomination Tuesday night and will take on Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. She faces an uphill battle against the popular and well-funded incumbent, something she candidly addressed during Tuesday night's victory speech.

"I am constantly hearing this is going to be such an uphill battle,” she said. “Please tell me when I didn't have an uphill battle."

Congress is attempting to tackle opioids, but still there’s little money to work with, meaning a short window and limited resources to expand treatment and help those struggling with addiction.
