SAN ANTONIO — In the governor’s race and 17 House races in Texas, no candidate received 50 percent of the vote in the primaries in March, prompting a runoff election.

Polls closed at 7 p.m. and results wrapped up just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Here are the races we followed and who they face come November: 

GOVERNOR RACE

WINNER OF DEMOCRATIC GUBERNATORIAL NOMINATION: LUPE VALDEZ

Lupe Valdez (52.4%), Andrew White (47.6%)

Who's Who: Former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez got 43 percent of the vote in the March primary. White, a Houston businessman, took second with 27 percent.

Valdez served as Dallas County sheriff for 13 years and is openly gay. White, new to public office, is the son of former Texas Gov. Mark White, who died in August.

Valdez will face Republican incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott.

U.S. HOUSE RACES

WINNER OF DIST. 21 REPUBLICAN NOMINATION: CHIP ROY

The runoff candidates: Chip Roy (52.3%), Matt McCaul (47.7%)

Covers: Bandera, Blanco, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, and Real counties as well as areas of Bexar, Comal, Hays, and Travis counties

Who's Who: Roy has worked for multiple Republican elected officials, including U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz. McCall is a businessman from Boerne. Roy has received the endorsement of soon-retired Rep. Lamar Smith and Cruz.

The race, which started with 18 nominees, is between Roy and McCall. This race is McCall's third try at the seat; he lost the last two elections against Rep. Smith, who elected to retire earlier this year.

WINNER OF DIST. 21 DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION: JOSEPH KOPSER

Runoff candidates: Mary Wilson (41.7%), Joseph Kopser (58.3%)

Covers: Bandera, Blanco, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, and Real counties as well as areas of Bexar, Comal, Hays, and Travis counties

Who's Who: Wilson is an Austin Community College math teacher, and Kopser, a tech entrepreneur and 20-year Army veteran.

Roy and Kopser will join Libertarian Lee Santos on the November ballot.

WINNER OF DIST. 23 DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION: GINA ORTIZ JONES

Runoff candidates: Rick Treviño (33.6%), Gina Ortiz Jones (67.4%)

Covers: Western San Antonio to just outside El Paso

Who’s Who: Trevino was a Bernie Sanders delegate to the 2016 convention, and captured only 17 percent of the vote in March. He’s a former high school teacher. Ortiz Jones is a West Side native and a former intelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force. She earned 41 percent of the vote in the primaries.  

Jones will join Republican incumbent Will Hurd on the November ballot.

STATE HOUSE RACE

WINNER OF HOUSE DIST. 121 REPUBLICAN NOMINATION: STEVE ALLISON

Runoff candidates: Steve Allison (57.5%), Matt Beebe (42.5%)

Covers: Bexar County communities of Alamo Heights, Olmos Park, Terrell Hill and northeast San Antonio

Who's Who: Allison is business attorney who recently served on the VIA board and has been endorsed by House Speaker Joe Straus. He received 26 percent of the primary vote. Beebe is an Air Force veteran and small business owner who captured 29 percent of the vote in March.

Allison will replace Straus’ open seat and will go up against Democratic nominee Celina Montoya who ran unopposed in primary.
