SAN ANTONIO — Two people are in serious condition after a shooting on the Southeast Side of the city.

The shooting happened at 3 p.m. on Saturday at a house near the 100 block of Vista Road.

San Antonio police have released preliminary information saying the landlord and her son went to the tenant’s home, went inside and began hitting the man with a metal post.

That’s when police say he pulled out a gun and shot them several times.

“I don’t know, they got the stories mixed up about her coming with a pipe, but that wasn’t true about the pipe,” 18-year-old Jose Chagolla, son of deceased landlord Jennifer Alvarado, said.

Chagolla was shot twice and released from the hospital Sunday. Alvarado was shot at least three times and later died at the hospital after a fight broke out between her, her son, and the tenant.

In an early report released by SAPD, it explains the tenant was behind on his rent and had other problems with the family.

Martinez had to defend himself, after police say Alvarado and her son allegedly assaulted him with a post from a chain link fence.

But the Chagolla family says that’s not the case.

“He came out choking her when she got there. And, then, when he came out choking her, my mom went out and grabbed the pipe from the side of the house. And, he comes out with a gun, and starts choking my mom again. When she started choked he pushes her back. And then I see the, you know, the renter, just three times – pow, pow, pow – and them my mom reacted – hit him on the head with the pipe,” Chagolla said.

He also added that his family was never there for rent money, but instead were looking to get back an air hose the tenant had borrowed.

Martinez remains at University Hospital in critical condition after suffering head trauma.

Police say charges against him are still pending.
