ORIGINAL STORY: A cyclist is dead after being struck by a San Antonio Police Department vehicle.

According to police, around 11:45 p.m. Friday, two officers were responding to a call about loud music. Both officers were in separate vehicles driving southbound on Somerset Road.

As the two approached an intersection, the first officer drove through and didn’t see anybody in the roadway. As the second officer approached the intersection, two men riding bicycles westbound on La Violeta Street rode past the stop sign and out into the oncoming path of the second police vehicle. One of the cyclists managed to make it across the roadway but the other was struck by the police vehicle.

The cyclist was a man in his late 60s and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A witness reported seeing both men on the bicycles ignore the stop sign and ride out into the right of way as the second police vehicle approached. The cyclist that was not hit showed signs of being intoxicated.

The officer who struck the cyclist is a 4-year veteran of the department. He said that he never saw either cyclist until after the impact. Per SAPD protocol, the officer must take a mandatory alcohol and drug screening. SAPD internal affairs will conduct an administrative inquiry to make sure all policies and procedures were followed. The officer will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
