SAN ANTONIO — After a closed door meeting with City Council members, Mayor Ron Nirenberg made it clear — there is no chance the City of San Antonio will pursue a proposal to host the Republican National Convention in 2020.

"As a whole, the city council did not believe that moving forward with a bid was worth it," he said.

At least two city council members expressed frustration with the Mayor's words.

"There's no disputing that this is an over $200 million opportunity, over 1,000 new jobs,” Councilman Greg Brockhouse said. “They may be short term jobs but [it’s] 1,000 jobs."

"I'm disappointed about this,” Councilman Clayton Perry said. “Number one, we are passing on something that would put San Antonio on the map not here in the U.S. but internationally. And we're passing on it."

Mayor Ron Nirenberg said the costs associated with security alone for a national convention, outweigh the benefits in the long run.

"There are historic costs,” said Nirenberg. “We know it was over $40 million in the city of Cleveland in 2016. Those costs are all projections though. As you go out in the future we know that costs have been increasing dramatically over the last several conventions as it relates to security."

Nirenberg said an additional 3,000 officers would be needed to help SAPD cover a convention likely to draw tourists, media, activists and large disruptions.

"While the economic impacts proposed are eye opening, there is a reason why the City of San Antonio has not bid on a political convention of this nature for 20 years," he said.

Councilman Brockhouse argues the reasons given by the Mayor are just excuses.

"I would say the difference is the man at the top of the ticket,” Brockhouse said. “Several members have made that, not today, but they have made that clear on public record that they are disgusted by Republicans and Donald Trump and they don't want them here."

He wonders if things would be different if council were approached by the Democratic National Convention.

"We didn't discuss that specifically, but I can tell you I have no interest in that one either," Nirenberg said.
