SAN ANTONIO -- Every year during Fiesta, children with special needs get to enjoy a day of fun at the carnival.

This year organizers are coming up short when it comes to volunteers.

"It's just a wonderful way for our community to pull together and make sure that everybody has an opportunity to Fiesta," said Melanie Cawthon with Disability SA.

Since 2003, the one-day Fiesta Especial has served as a fun, free way for kids and adults with special needs to enjoy the carnival experience at the Alamodome.

From Poteet to Helotes, more than 3,000 people from all across the region come out to enjoy the day.

However, this year they need about 80 volunteers to make it happen during the morning shift from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. They need help setting up, assiting kids on and off rides, and being classroom buddies to ride and hang out throughout the day.

Cawthon said usually they have enough people, but for some reason there's a big gap in the morning.

"So if we don't get the volunteers, we won't be putting out the games because nobody likes to see a game that they can't play. With the rides, if we don't get the volunteers to help the kids on and off the rides, the show operators just can't do that," Cawthon said.
