POTEET, Texas — The “Strawberry Capital of Texas” is getting ready for its annual festival.

The 71st annual Poteet Strawberry Festival takes place this weekend, April 13-15.

The annual festival was started in 1948 by the Poteet Rotary Club as a way to encourage World War II veterans to return to work on the farms. Today, the festival has spanned seven decades and draws thousands of visitors who flock to South Texas for the infamous Poteet berries. Part of the proceeds from the festival are put toward a scholarship program for local students.

Festival-goers can expect a parade, food and drinks sold by businesses, live music performances and strawberries from local growers. During the festival, all local berries will be sold in boxes labeled “Fresh Produce-Poteet, Texas.”
