SAN ANTONIO -- A new program through the Bexar County Sheriff's Office is giving students a firsthand look at what happens in jail.

It is known as the “Inside Look Tour” and is designed for students from different backgrounds with the goal of opening eyes and letting them make their own choices.

It is a tour that many students never have the chance to experience.

"Life inside this is real. We want them to experience it firsthand. We want them to see the sights, hear the sounds. We want them to smell it, taste it," said Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.

The students go through daily routines with deputies and hear stories from family members and inmates themselves.

Salazar said that some of the students in the program are straight-A students who plan to attend law school.

“Somebody, for whatever reason, thought they could benefit from a look inside the Bexar County Jail," said Salazar.

No matter the reason, the lesson is one of responsibility and choices.

"Maybe some of these kids, nobody has ever taken the time to explain that you can pick your actions, but you can't necessarily pick your consequences," Salazar said.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office hopes to continue the program in the future.
