MUMBAI, India — It's day five of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's trip to India, and so far, he has met with the country's top energy officials and its prime minister.

Abbott's meeting with the Indian prime minister is quite historic as it's the first time a sitting governor from the United States met with the dignitary.

Their meeting lasted over an hour and Abbott’s office said they covered a range of topics including defense and technology, healthcare and trade.

In fact, in the governor's latest tweet, he mentioned that Texas is the second largest exporter to India out of all states — amounting to $3.4 billion dollars last year.

On a related note, Texas-based Lockheed Martin is in the running to provide weapons to India.

India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, emphasized to Abbott that his country would also like to have the capability to build their own arms.

In their talks, Modi also expressed concern about the Indian community affected by Hurricane Harvey in Houston and praised Texas' efforts in rebuilding the city.

"I pointed out that it demonstrates the resilience that we had in Houston and in Texas. But I pointed out that I know that it's a similar resilience that the Indian community in India has."

On Thursday, Abbott is taking a short break by visiting the Taj Mahal.

Then, Friday, March 30, he's visiting with the Adani group — a private energy company.

He's also flying back to Austin on Friday.
