AUSTIN, Texas — The family of Mark Anthony Conditt has released a statement following his death.

An aunt of the Austin bombing suspect, only identifying herself as Shanee, gave CNN a statement on behalf of her family:

"We are devastated and broken at the news that our family could be involved in such an awful way. We had no idea of the darkness that Mark must have been in. Our family is a normal family in every way. We love, we pray, and we try to inspire and serve others. Right now our prayers are for those families that have lost loved ones, for those impacted in any way, and for the soul of our Mark. We are grieving and we are in shock. Please respect our privacy as we deal with this terrible, terrible knowledge and try to support each other through this time."

Shanee is in Colorado and has been in touch with Mark's immediate family in Texas, the members of which are devastated, she said.

"Our family is very loving and kind family. This is just so overwhelmingly devastating," Shanee said.

Shanee further said she last saw Mark over Christmas and said everything was normal and "wonderful."

"Christmas was wonderful. We played cards. We laughed. We went to shows together. It was a wonderful time," she said.
