SAN ANTONIO - CPS Energy rolling out new tech to find underground gas leaks faster and more easily.

The new SUV - named "Smart Sniffer" - has special equipment on board that scans the air for escaping natural gas.

The ‘sniffing technology’ also comes in handy during emergencies – like accidental gas breaks – by helping keep people out of harm's way.

“Because gas will travel the direction of the wind current. So, it’s advised to go up wind. But, you’re correct, if the vehicle was out there, we’d be able to detect with some drives and know which areas are safer as opposed to others," said Joel Settles of CPS Energy.

CPS Energy plans on adding more units on the street in coming years.
