SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department made 14 arrests on Sunday night for drag racing.

Authorities say drag racing is a growing problem that can lead to deadly crashes.

Rudy Garcia moved into this neighborhood behind Southwest Military Drive two years ago.

Like clockwork, Garcia says, every single weekend he will hear racers.

Most of the racing takes place on Southwest Military Drive, but sometimes, the reckless drivers blaze down residential side-streets.

"They might lose control and hit my car or go into a yard. And they've lost control a couple of times, so," said Garcia.

Officer Doug Greene says drag racing has been glorified in Hollywood but says he knows first-hand that street racing can be deadly.

And the charges are steep if you're caught.

"A vehicle can be a weapon as well, so people don't understand that when you're engaging in drag racing. Here in the state of Texas, that's a class B misdemeanor. So, the officer's not going to write you a citation. You will be placed in handcuffs and taken to jail," said Greene.

Of the 14 arrested on Sunday night, one of those drivers was also charged with child endangerment. She had her three children in the car with her while she was racing.

If you hear engines revving near you while you're driving, slow down and pull over.

"Do the best that you can to distance yourself and those vehicles," said Greene.

And if you can safely do so, call police.
