SAN ANTONIO - The heat is on in the race for Bexar County District Attorney.

While candidate Joe Gonzales would rather not discuss it saying, "I'm not going to go into any negative attacks or go into any negative attacks that my opponent has leveled," the incumbent isn't shying away from what has been a mudslinging season.

"When you look at the mailers, when you look at the commercials, he's called me everything from a racist to a bigot to intolerant," said incumbent  Nico LaHood.

Democratic Candidate Joe Gonzales is a former prosecutor, magistrate judge and current defense attorney and told us he'd rather discuss what he says are the real issues.

"Fighting domestic violence. One of the statistics that I have been made aware of is that during the current administration more than 60 percent of cases have been dismissed," he said.

The current DA says those numbers are not correct.

"There's not a 60 percent dismissal rate. There's a 35 percent dismissal rate. He's playing with the numbers and making up his own equation," said LaHood.

La Hood is launching attacks of his own by accusing his opponent of siding with child molesters and seeking zero prosecution for prostitution cases.

A real issue, LaHood says, is where the Gonzales campaign is getting its funding.

"My opponent has gotten a million dollars from a New York billionaire in four weeks and I think the community needs to ask themselves why. This billionaire George Soros has been involved in ten, at least ten other district attorney races around the country and he's trying to impact the fabric of these communities," said LaHood.

"They don't have any interest in looking for anything from me. They certainly haven't contacted me. All they're looking for is a fair administration of justice," said Gonzales.

What both agree on is that voters should do their research.
