NATIONWIDE — Earlier this week, President Trump suggested arming teachers in order to curb gun violence following the Florida shooting.

In response, thousands of teachers across the country are using the hashtag #ArmMeWith on social media to say what they would rather be armed with in the classroom.

The movement was started by two teachers on Instagram, Olivia Bertels and Brittany Wheaton. Both English teachers, the two told CNN they were inspired to create the movement because of a friend who teaches at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Wheaton posted a photo with the phrase: “#ArmMeWith the resources and funding needed to help students experiencing mental health issues, NOT guns.” Since the movement began a few days ago, more than 5,000 teachers have joined the conversation on social media. Several posts suggest arming teachers with more school supplies, smaller classrooms and pay raises.

High school students in Texas and across the country have also voiced their concerns about school safety by organizing walkouts  in solidarity with students in Florida demanding stricter gun laws.

Wheaton is offering a free download of the #ArmMeWith poster on Google Drive.
