NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – A robbery of a Lowe’s home improvement store turned into a police chase, which ended in a three-hour standoff with police Monday night.

Around 6:30 p.m. New Braunfels police were called to a Lowe’s on Interstate 35 after a man demanded cash from an employee and then drove off. The vehicle was traveling northbound on I-35 when officers spotted the suspect and attempted to pull him over.

When the suspect refused to stop, officers placed spike strips in the road, which punctured one of the vehicle’s tires. Still refusing to pull over, officers utilized a Pursuit Intervention Technique to push the fleeing car sideways, causing the driver to stop.

The suspect refused to exit the vehicle, causing officers to fire bean bag rounds from a shotgun at the vehicle. According to police, the suspect began yelling that he had a gun and would start shooting if officers didn’t back away.

The New Braunfels Crisis Negotiation Team and SWAT team were called, shutting down I-35. A standoff ensued as negotiators tried to convince the man to surrender peacefully.

Three hours later, the suspect, 46-year-old Ruben Ramirez Jr. from San Antonio, was taken into custody. He was treated at a nearby hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Ramirez was booked into the Comal County Jail for charges ranging from aggravated robbery, evading arrest with a vehicle, and resisting arrest.

Traffic was backed up for 11 miles Monday night during the standoff.
