SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The polls opening on Feb. 20 mark the first day of the mid-term elections.

Early voting is kicking off on Tuesday and election officials are predicting a record-breaking voter turnout.

Voters have quite a bit of decision making to do this election season. There are hotly contested Democratic and Republican primary races on the ballot.

The Texas Secretary of State reported that more than 15 million people registered to vote in November 2017, which is a state record.

Across the board, the Republican primaries will be closely watched, including the Texas Land Commissioner. Incumbent George P. Bush will have a tough challenger from former Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson.

Controversial Agricultural Commissioner Sid Miller has two contenders vying for his seat.

First-term Bexar County District Attorney Nico LaHood has a tough fight on his hands. Defense Attorney Joe Gonzalez is pounding the streets, getting plenty of voter attention hoping to take LaHood’s position.

Texans are looking at several major races in the United States Senate and House. More than 20 candidates are vying for the District 21 House seat; a position Congressman Lamar Smith has held for 30 years. Smith announced his retirement from Washington last year.

Republican Congressman Bill Hurd, who represents District 23, has filed for re-election. Six other candidates, one Republican and five Democrats, have their eyes on his seat.

One of the races that has been getting a lot of attention is for one Texas Senate seat. Democratic Congressman Beto O' Rourke is looking to topple Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who has held that position for four years.

Voters looking to cast their ballots early can head over to a polling location, which open at 7 a.m. You are required to bring a form of government issued identification, which includes a driver's license, passport or military ID.

Bexar County has 38 polling locations.

Early voting ends March 2.
