SAN ANTONIO — A staff member at the Brooke Army Medical Center has contracted legionella bacteria.

Legionella bacteria can cause symptoms ranging from a mild flu-like illness to a type of pneumonia called Legionnaires’ disease. The bacteria is airborne and is transmitted when someone breathes in mist of vapor containing the bacteria.

This is the third case reported since August 2017. According to the Emerging and Acute Infectious Diseases guidelines, two or more cases in the same facility within 365 days is considered an outbreak.

At this time BAMC is not aware of any other patients or staff members who have contracted the bacteria. The staff member worked in building 15. In a statement released by BAMC, the safety of staff and patients is top priority. BAMC has moved building 15 staff members to another location. The hospital is conducting tests to determine if the building is the source of bacteria.
