SAN ANTONIO — A dozen charter schools across San Antonio are celebrating National School Choice Week.
Premier High School in Windcrest hosted the event this week. The Texas Charter School Association said there are over 25,000 students in 90 charter school campuses across Bexar County, about seven percent of all students.
Since 2013, Bexar County charter schools have seen an enrollment jump of about 13,000 kids and 36 new campuses open. Students said the environment gets them ready for the real world.
"I do believe schools such as this are beneficial for students, not just who prefer smaller classes but for everyone in general because you really do get more experience, that way when you head into the outside world, you already have it," Marisol Salasrios, a senior at Premier High School said.
Numbers from the association also show economically disadvantaged students and students with a limited English proficiency have a higher pass rate on the state's STAAR test.
