SAN ANTONIO — If you've ever driven down Bandera Road, it's pretty obvious that traffic never stops until you get to a red light.

That's why Leon Valley citizens wanted an extra pair of eyes on the road to help keep their community safe.

"We then took their requests to our citizens police advisory committee who also voted overwhemlingly for us to investigate installing red-light cameras on Bandera Road," said Leon Valley city manager Kelly Kuenstler.

After a city council vote, the rest was history.

Eight red light safety cameras are going up along some of Bandera Road's busiest intersections.

"We will have a certified police officer actually view the footage before the ticket is issued," Kuenstler said.

The ticket will be a civil penalty and won't show up on your driving record — however it will cost you $75 each time you get caught running the red light.

"Taxpayers have paid nothing for the red-light camera installation thus far. Once the red light cameras are installed, we don't expect the taxpayers will pay anything for them. We anticipate that the fees generated from the cameras will actually pay for the cameras," said Kuenstler.

The first set at Bandera and Timco is set to go live on Monday.

For the first 30 days violators will be given a warning, but after that, it'll cost you.
