Snow moved into the foothills and mountains Tuesday night and will continue to spread eastward into the Piedmont Wednesday. With this system now moving slower than previously expected, forecast snowfall amounts have also increased across the area.

Those across western North Carolina will wake up to snow Wednesday morning as temperatures continue to cool and a deepening plume of moisture pushes eastward. Heaviest snow will fall in the mid-morning to early afternoon hours just as temperatures begin to cool to the freezing mark. With this situation at play, snowfall potential has increased. Areas along and to the east of I-77 could now see anywhere between 3 inches to over 6 inches of snow. Areas farther west will see lesser amounts, with 2 to 4 inches possible.

This system will move to the east by this evening, with very cold air to follow in behind it. Temperatures will drop quickly as skies clear, with teens on tap for the Piedmont and single digits likely for the mountains. Wind chills will become dangerously cold in the mountains, pushing between 5 to 10 below zero.

With any moisture lingering overnight in the form of snow melt, refreezing will occur, resulting in areas of black ice for the Thursday morning commute.

Sunshine will return for Thursday and continue into the weekend as temperatures warm back to above average levels.
