SCHERTZ, Texas — A community is still mourning after the death of a young boy, killed during a police shooting.
Coming to work this morning was a solemn experience for Victoria Sanders. She works with her father-in-law at their food truck right outside the Pecan Grove mobile home community in Schertz.
“It was a little bit of grief coming in and looking down into that neighborhood and being like, ‘Just a few days ago there was a loss of life,’” Sanders said.
Thursday a stray bullet hit Kameron Prescott, 6, while inside his home. Bexar County Deputies thought the suspect they shot at was armed at the time. She was also killed.
Like so many, Sanders is still trying to understand this tragedy, comparing him to her own son, who is close in age.
“He was like most kids are. Excited about being with his family and Christmas and the holidays and everything for this to happen, it’s really tragic for him and that family,” said Sanders.
Sanders and community members have rallied around the Prescott family raising money through the local bank, but also asking questions now that more details have been released, and how this could have been prevented.
“We are on one hand kind of ‘how did this happen?’ Wanting more information on how this happened and on the other hand kind of concerned as to what procedures were taken before shots were fired,” said Sanders.
The Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District released a statement extending condolences to Kameron's family. He was a first grader at Wiederstein Elementary School.
“Kameron was the kindest-hearted little boy that I have ever had the pleasure of teaching,” said Shanda Ince, Kameron’s first grade teacher. “He loved to make everyone laugh. He will be missed by all of his classmates and everyone at Wiederstein.”
“Kameron was a ball of energy, happy, smart and could strike up a conversation with anyone,” Counselor Maria Morales said. “He also had a great sense of humor and caring heart. He’ll be truly missed by his classmates, teachers and the Wiederstein staff.”
A fund has been set up to help Kameron's family with expenses.
