SCHERTZ, Texas — A 7-year-old boy is dead following a shootout between a suspect and the Bexar County Sheriff's deputies.
The boy was inside a home at the Pecan Grove mobile home park when he was struck in the abdomen by a stray bullet on Thursday afternoon. He was taken to University Hospital where he later died. The boy's father and young female relative were also taken to the hospital, but they were not injured.
The unnamed child was caught in a shootout between a woman was believed to have stolen a vehicle earlier in the day and deputies.
"We want the family and everyone to know that this is of the upmost importance to us," said Sheriff Javier Salazar.
The female suspect is also dead. Authorities have not identified her at this time but say that she is white, in her 30s and had several outstanding warrants.
Authorities chased the suspect to the mobile home park after Schertz deputies received a call about a stolen vehicle at 10:48 a.m. When the deputy made contact with the female suspect, she threatened him with a gun. The deputy took cover and the suspect ran into the woods nearby.
According to Bexar County Sheriff's Office, they were able to track the armed suspect down after she tried to break into several area homes.
Police are processing the scene. No deputies were wounded.
Investigators are trying to determine where the boy was when he was shot and if the bullet was from the suspect's gun or one of the deputies.
Sheriff Salazar said a gun was not found on the suspect after she died.
