GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The City of Greensboro and Guilford County Schools partner for a colorful art project.

Some fifth grade students at Cone Elementary School and four other schools had a chance to paint snow plow blades this year for the City of Greensboro.

"It's a privilege, because we're one of the five schools that get to paint this,” said Darryn Alexander, a fifth grader at Cone.

The budding artists at the schools chose creative designs for their plow.

“We did a voting contest, with the drawings, and then we voted which design the students liked best,” said Lori Rickard, art teacher at Cone.

The students at Cone decided on a mountain scene with trees and snowmen.

Rickard said this project allows her students to not only learn new techniques but take pride in their work.

"Seeing them enjoy this process has been incredibly rewarding,” she said. “I can't offer them opportunities like this all the time. So when we got this chance we just had to jump on it."

The City of Greensboro plans to display the blades outside of the Melvin Municipal Office Building on Governmental Plaza, the first week of December. The functional art will then be used for clearing snow from streets.
