DALLAS, Texas – On this day in 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas.

Kennedy and the first lady, Jackie Onassis, were riding in an open-top limousine when gunshots rang out downtown.

President Kennedy was pronounced dead at Parkland Hospital.

Recently, hundreds more documents about his assasination were released. Most of the collection, comprising about 5 million pages of records, has been released to the public, but some documents have been withheld over the years to protect individuals, intelligence sources and methods and national security.

The suspect, Lee Harvey Oswald, was shot to death two days after Kennedy's death.
