AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Fire Department wants you to stay safe if you fry your turkey this Thanksgiving.

It's become popular, but it's also dangerous.

During a kitchen fire demonstration, AFD also showed how hot oil and water don't mix.  They say to make sure the turkey is completely thawed out and your oil isn't over your fryer's fill line.

Never leave the frying turkey unattended and keep the pot away from the house, children, pets and yourself.

"So what we're trying to say today is just be safe, have a good time, enjoy your family, enjoy the food that comes with the holiday but always have safety in mind," said AFD Battalion Chief Joe Limon.

According to the National Fire Protection Organization, more home fires happen on Thanksgiving than any other day.
