SAN ANTONIO - Through the heart of downtown, crews working on the San Pedro Creek Improvements Project say it's taking shape.

On Wednesday, engineers revealed the progress made on phase one of the linear park. Phase one stretches from the tunnel inlet near Fox Tech High School to Houston Street.

The project includes a total of four phases covering about 2 miles. Phase one includes views from the tunnel inlet and a pedestrian bridge.

Engineers are also looking into entertainment amenities such as an amphitheater.

"We are working towards a design of an amphitheater next to the Alameda Theater, but we are discovering it might serve a better purpose to put a plaza in there," said Kerry Averyt, a project manager for the San Antonio River Authority.

Along with entertainment, Averyt said the construction of the creek also serves other purposes: "The root need for this project is flood control, so this is really a public works project but we are using this opportunity to build a public works project and also create a public amenity."

Engineers are planning to finish by the city's Tricentennial celebration next May.

"It's a project of a lifetime. This is a project that will transform San Antonio," said Averyt.
