SAN ANTONIO - Come Monday, the Salvation Army will be filled with parents signing up for the Angel Tree program.

If last year is any indication, thousands of moms, dads, grandmas and grandpas will line the building waiting to get in.

"You drive by and you'd think the new iPhone is on sale and it's people lined up for registration," said Brad Mayhar of the Salvation Army.  "The last couple of years the number has been slightly over 7,000 but it's been slightly higher each year. This year I wouldn't be surprised if that number gets a little closer to the 8,000 mark."

Despite the increase, the community has always come through by donating thousands of gifts of toys and clothing for children who would otherwise not have them on Christmas.

Though this year Salvation Army officials worry that giving community may be stretched thin. Harvey's devastating effects on Texas had San Antonio stepping up recently to lend a hand with donations of necessities and cash.

"I want people to just remember that even though a lot of help was given to hurricane relief and rightfully so, we still have regular programs that are still going to be in need of assistance," said Mayhar.

It's assistance the Salvation Army says changes lives.

"They come up to Salvation Army staff and come up to volunteers and tears are flowing. But they're happy tears. They're grateful that there were people out there that cared enough that thought of those that maybe were less fortunate this year," he said.

The wish now is that people continue to care any way they can.

"People have given a lot already but I think people overall are generous and they're going to continue to help others," he said.

Registration for the Angel Tree Program starts next week. People can register at the Salvation Army from Monday through Friday any time from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You must bring a photo ID, birth certificates for all children in your home, proof of residency and proof of income. Children are not allowed at the registration.
