SAN ANTONIO – The Alamo City will be embarking on a 'Smart Cities' initiative in 2017.

The goal - integrate more technology that will benefit locals and visitors.

Wednesday, city manager Sheryl Sculley will outline some of the ideas, such as adding wi-fi service in major parks and adding solar power benches where visitors can charge mobile devices.

There's even a plan to add kiosks around town where people can find events and other city information.

The discussion comes ahead of the Sept. 15 vote to finalize next year's budget, which will include funding for the tech projects.

Wednesday's meeting begins at 2 p.m. at the Municipal Plaza Building.

Thursday, the conversation will turn to annexation.

A few months ago, city staff recommended scaling back on annexation plans for five areas in Bexar County.

This week, council will begin to talk about what the new plan will look like.

Three of those areas are on the agenda - one off I-10 West, another off Highway 281 North and another on the city's south side.

Under consideration will be a proposal to negotiate a non-annexation agreement for the Highway 281 north residential area.
