SAN ANTONIO - The memorial at Public Safety Headquarters keeps growing. Flags across the city have been lowered, and more and more people continue to come and show their support for the fallen officer and all members of the department.

Earlier, Chief William McManus said this shooting could happen anytime and anywhere in this city as he broke down the details of what happened.

"Two great police officers. Gunned down for no reason other than they wanted to talk to this individual," Chief McManus said.

Officers Miguel Moreno and Julio Cavazos were on patrol - looking into vehicle burglaries on West Evergreen Street near San Antonio College.

"They happened to cross a vehicle that looked like it had been broken into," said Chief McManus.

They then saw two suspects and began to get out of their car.

"The one suspect walked toward the police car and the other suspect immediately opened fire. Officer Moreno went down immediately having been struck in the head," Chief McManus said.

During the shootout, Cavazos was shot in the chest and pulled Moreno from the line of fire.

The suspect, Andrew Bice, was shot by the officers, but later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"Those officers were out there and they were working. And they were working hard," said Chief McManus.

Some things are still unclear, like why the suspect opened fire and how the two suspects are connected.

Still, for the department, one thing is clear:  "We are going to lose a truly, truly beautiful man. Imagine one of your relatives, shot and killed on the street for apparently no reason," said Chief McManus.
