SAN ANTONIO -- The new tower of the Methodist Children's Hospital is just days away from opening its doors and Spectrum News got a sneak peek at what it looks like.

The new tower adds 18 beds in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit for 94 total -- making it one of the largest NICU's in the region.

The emergency room also grew to 40 beds.

The new addition increases the size of the Methodist Campus by over 400,000 square feet, with lots of bright colors and windows.

The hospital said the design reflects the community it serves.

"We built specific rooms so that families can stay together. We took into account the demographic of all types of families we have here in San Antonio. Obviously the kids don't come in by themselves. A lot of extended families come as well," said Methodist Children's Hospital CEO Robert Lenza.

Methodist officials say despite the changes, it's the great hospital doctors and nurses that make all the difference.

"They care deeply for every single kid that comes to these doors. So, that makes it different. What we've done now is build an infrastructure around them that supports all of those," said Lenza.

Methodist Children's Hospital first opened its doors in San Antonio in 1998.

Twenty years since the doors first opened, the population of Bexar County has exploded.

Methodist Children's said it is working harder to meet the demands of surrounding counties as well.

"It's not uncommon for people to drive two or three hours to come and get our services," said Lenza.

The new tower will officially open this weekend.
