SAN ANTONIO—Internships are paving the way for students with disabilities.

For the first time, the high school transition program Project Search has teamed up with Northside ISD’s Nellie Reddix Center and La Cantera Hill Country Resort to bring learning opportunities to San Antonio.

"It means a lot. I love coming here to help the guys out, I love getting up every day and coming to work every day and making sure I can make my peers happy and the La Cantera associates happy, and that's why I love coming here,” said Project Search Intern Dylan Garner.

Over the past year, 11 interns ages 18 to 22 have experienced hands-on training around the resort. They'll spend several weeks in every department then switch to see what they like best.

With graduation right around the corner, many hope to find a permanent job working in maintenance, the coffee shop, and the pool and grounds department.

"The amazing thing with our students, they go through challenges that you and I could not even imagine daily. They come into work every day with a smile,” Redixx Center Principal Robin Fields said.

Aside from the fee for basic uniforms, Project Search is free for students. While this was the first year for it to be implemented in San Antonio, next year at least two other local school districts will be joining.
