SAN ANTONIO -- Texas leaders announced $32 million in renovations Wednesday to the Alamo and the surrounding area.
The details are still being worked out, but the money will help build an updated museum for Alamo objects and artifacts.
That includes the roughly 200 pieces musician Phil Collins donated last year.
Officials say that money, which the Legislature approved this year, will also help fix the foundation, the roof and other parts falling into disrepair.
But the main objective is to turn the area into a place of reverence and education.
"From the Native Americans who were here first, to the Mexicans and the Tejanos and the Texans, and the people who immigrated here to create the history of Texas. So, the Alamo is sort of the birthplace, but there's a long history that needs to be told and it has to be more than just the Disneyland version," said State Sen. José Menéndez, D-San Antonio.
City officials are working on a master plan for the Alamo and the plaza.
The Alamo was named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations earlier this summer.
