No criminal charges will be filed against a former University of the Incarnate Word police officer for the 2013 shooting death of 23-year-old student Cameron Redus, according the Bexar County District Attorney’s office.

The district attorney announced Tuesday that a Bexar County grand jury voted not to indict former UIW Police Cpl. Christopher Carter in Redus’ death.

On the night of Dec. 6, 2013, Carter pulled Redus over in front of his house after he saw the student driving erratically. The officer said Redus was combative, which led the two to engage in a violent struggle. Carter fired his weapon six times, hitting Redus with five rounds, including once in the back. Redus’ blood alcohol content was .155, almost twice the legal limit.

University of the Incarnate Word Chancellor Dr. Denise Doyle released the following statement after the decision was announced:

We appreciate the work of all involved in this investigation and believe today’s decision affirms that Cpl. Carter was acting in accordance with his role as a licensed Texas Peace Officer. The grand jury, in arriving at their decision, clearly gave full consideration to the District Attorney’s investigation materials, most of which are confidential.  Regardless, the tragic circumstances of the loss of the life of Cameron Redus have affected countless lives. A family has lost their son and a peace officer must live with the decision he was compelled to make. The University continues to extend prayers to all involved in this tragedy. We respect the judicial process and will continue to watch it unfold

The case was investigated by the University of Incarnate Word, the Alamo Heights Police Department, the Texas Rangers and the FBI. The district attorney’s office says it presented all evidence gathered during an independent investigation of the shooting.
