We welcome back our teachers and students with a chance of rain!  Perfectly timed for the start of the new school year, a very weak "cool" front drops down across Texas to help take the edge off the heat...at least compared to where we've been lately.  Today's forecast calls for a high near 99 with a 30% chance of showers & storms.

It doesn't sound like much but we'll gladly take a drop in temperatures, even if it's only by a couple of degrees.  Yesterday's high of 103 in Metro Austin marked our 40th triple digit day of the year and the sixth consecutive 100+ day in a row.  And, no doubt, we could certainly use the rain.

The first round of rain developed overnight, leaving a few puddles for the early commute.  Top totals from this morning:
.36" Escarpment Blvd.
.25" Elgin
.23" Austin Airport
.20" Hornsby Bend
.20" Seminary Ridge
.16" Manchaca
.14" Onion Crk @ US183
.07" Elroy
.04" Cedar Creek
.04" Dripping Springs 8 W

Be on the lookout for more storm clouds to develop.  As the weak front eases south across our region, likely right at the hottest time of the afternoon, we think more showers & storms will form.  The strongest could deliver some briefly heavy downpours along with lightning & thunder.  And some gusty storm winds could be in the mix, too.  When thunder roars, head indoors!

Latest computer models show some scattered storms through the early evening then maybe one more round trying to fire up tomorrow as the front stalls and/or washes out nearby.

Upper-level high pressure looks to take over the middle of America later this week, ensuring plenty more hot weather in the short term.
