Hail pounded parts of Bastrop County Sunday during the late afternoon thunderstorms.  There were several reports provided by the public to the National Weather Service of four- to over five-inch diameter hail reported just south of Smithville on Highway 95.  As the storm continued to move the hail reports extended to the far southeast side of Smithville.

The NWS will likely confirm that this will become the largest hail recorded in Bastrop County.  Back on March 25, 1993  a 4.5" hailstone (the size of a grapefruit) was reported in Paige in northeast Bastrop County.

March 25 is known as Austin Hail Day because the three costliest hail storms all occurred on March 25 ... 1993, 2005, and the most recent in 2009.   During the afternoon of 3/25/2009 reports of hail two to three inches in diameter were reported city-wide.  The largest report was 3 inches (tea cup) in the Milwood Subdivision near Duval and Parmer followed a report of 2.5 inches (tennis balls) 1 mile south-southwest of Jollyville that resulted in car damage.

Up until this past Sunday the largest hailstone reported in Central Texas was 4 inches (softball) at 1:05 a.m. on May 15, 2008.  Windows were broken out of a home on Merrie Lynn Ave. three miles northeast of Manor.

There won't be any hail to deal with on March 25, 2018.  There is only a ten percent chance of rain Sunday.
