It's been the coldest morning in seven years in Metro Austin and eight years at the Austin Airport, where a new record low of 15 has been set (previously 21 from 1982.)  So cold, in fact, that we saw some bone-chilling single digits in the area around sunrise.

The coldest in Texas we could find?  -2 at Cross Plains, which is between Brownwood and Abilene.

While there hasn't been any additional precipitation, the threat for ice continues until all temps get above freezing.  Austin area temperatures dropped to 32 shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday morning and have been below ever since, but the forecast calls for at least a brief thaw this afternoon.  We're looking for mid to upper 30s at the "warmest" around 4 p.m. then temps will drop quickly back into another hard freeze tonight.

Futurecast shows a bright day with just a few high clouds.  North winds continue to diminish and will turn, becoming southerly tomorrow.  Clouds could push back into the region from the south as we get into the late part of the day Thursday.

A disturbance is forecast to dive from the Central Rockies into Texas, bringing a slim rain chance back into the picture locally for Friday (20%.)

Southerly winds will help us quickly warm back up to comfortable highs near 70 this weekend.  There could be a few sprinkles on Saturday (20% chance) then, on Sunday, a Pacific cold front is on the docket to cross the I-35 corridor with a 40% chance for showers & possibly a few isolated storms.
