GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Carolina Cobras are only making this look easy.

  • Carolina Cobras are one win away from claiming a championship
  • Cobras will host the Columbus Lions in the Greensboro Coliseum
  • Game kicks off at 7 p.m.

In their first year as a National Arena League team, Head Coach Billy Back has his team one win away from claiming a championship. His team will have home field as well as the Cobras host the Columbus Lions inside the Greensboro Coliseum on Monday night.

"They put a lot of hard work in throughout the entire season," Back said at practice Wednesday.  "If they aren't focused now, they aren't professionals. I think the focus is at an all-time high right now, and we want to finish the deal."

In arena football, scores are going to be high and the Cobras have plenty of talent to score points. Jordan Jolly leads a quintet of players scoring double-digit touchdowns this season.  Jolly has 23 trips to the end zone, followed by Tyron Laughinghouse (22), Phillip Barnett (21), Fabian Guerra (14) and Tyrell Goodman (13).  Laughinghouse put up his numbers in 12 games and is listed on the Cobras IR.

As an expansion team, expectations are generally going to be low but Back's group banded together quickly and now have a shot at a championship.

"To get the right players in here, the right personalities, the chemistry we've had," Back says, "to be able to play in the championship game was our goal from day one.  It was an attainable goal, but it still took work to get there. To win it would be gratifying."

Monday's championship game kicks off at 7 p.m.
