AUSTIN, Texas—When it comes to welcoming a Major League Soccer team, the possibility alone has football fanatics fired up.

"It is definitely the biggest push and move forward for our cause, if you will, so we are ecstatic right now," said Ryan Riggins, a member of MLS in Austin.

Austin-area soccer fans are rallying for the Columbus Crew SC to relocate – a prospect validated by a visit from the president of the ownership group for the Crew.

"Austin is an incredibly dynamic marketplace,” said Dave Greeley, president of Precourt Sports Ventures. “We love where Austin is today, but we really love where Austin is going tomorrow, in the next 10, 20, 30 years."

During a Q&A session, Greeley squashed rumors the new franchise would be housed on the Forty Acres.

"If we only had one option to move to Austin, Texas and if it was the Darrell K. Royal Memorial stadium, we wouldn't move to Austin, Texas," Greeley said.

Team owners want the stadium to be downtown, and Mayor Steve Adler has already announced it wouldn't receive any public funding.

But Greeley also assured fans that while nothing is set in stone, the company wants the team here.

"The way we look at it is nobody needs us, but we hope people want us. So it's our intent to be a strong, significant, not only soccer club, but regional community platform in Central Texas," said Greeley.

While there are plenty more discussions and planning required before the city can claim its first professional sports team, there are already high hopes.

"My wife and I moved here 20 years ago to have the opportunity to be your first season ticket holders," said Kirk Clennan of MLS in Austin.

MLS in Austin is asking soccer fans to attend the Austin City Council meeting on Nov. 9.

Council members are expected to work with Precourt Sports Ventures and evaluate the possibility of utilizing city-owned land for the privately financed stadium.
