AUSTIN, Texas — As the National Rifle Association gears up for its annual meeting in Dallas later this week, how much political candidates receive from the gun lobby remains under scrutiny. While students marched for gun control after the Parkland, Florida school shooting, members of the NRA opened their pocketbooks in record numbers. Our Washington reporter Margaret Chadbourn takes a look at how the NRA’s agenda is in focus as the group kicks off its convention with President Trump and Vice President Pence set to speak Friday.

The race for Texas House Speaker now has a Democrat in the running. Rep. Eric Johnson, D-Dallas, filed to run Wednesday. Johnson represents District 100, which includes parts of Dallas and Mesquite. He enters a race that already includes three Republicans. Our political analysts join us at 7 to discuss what’s likely to be an even more crowded field of candidates. 

As girls join the ranks of the Boy Scouts, the program will also be changing its name to Scouts BSA. The shift is meant to be a welcoming sign to girls who will start joining the ranks.  We speak to the Capitol Area BSA Director of Marketing and Public Relations about what this means for scouts in Texas and across the nation.
