AUSTIN, Texas - Texas's former land commissioner has officially entered the race to get his old job back.

Jerry Patterson served as the state's land commissioner from 2003 to 2015.

After an unsuccessful campaign for lieutenant governor, Patterson endorsed current land commissioner George P. Bush.

But Patterson has since criticized Bush for cutting hundreds of jobs at the Land Commissioner's Office.

He also didn't like Bush's $450 million revamp of the Alamo.

Coincidentally, Patterson will go up against Bush on March 6 in the Republican primary, which is also the date of the anniversary of the end of the Battle of the Alamo.

"On that day the question voters will be confronted with is to vote for myself or vote for Commissioner Bush. The question will be who can do the best job. I think the evidence is clear, and I intend to be that choice,” said Patterson.

In 2014, Patterson helped bring many Alamo artifacts which had been in the collection of musician Phil Collins back to Texas.
