DALLAS — As temperatures ramp up and become increasingly dangerous, it is important to keep your furry pals safe. The SPCA of Texas has offered tips to pet owners to keep pets comfortable during days when temperatures can become unbearable.

SPCA’s tips to keep your paw-fect pal safe:

  • Keep your pets hydrated

  • Schedule exercise with your pets wisely on warm days

  • Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day

  • Consider using paw wax or booties to shield sensitive paws from hot pavement

It is important to make sure your animals have access to fresh, cool water at all times. SPCA recommends placing multiple water bowls around your home and refilling them regularly. Avoid using metal bowls outside and make sure bowl that are kept outside are in shaded areas.

Playtime should be done when temperatures are lower, during the early morning or late evening. Hot pavement can burn paw pads, so opt for walking on grassy areas as opposed to sidewalks.

Heatstroke is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition for your pets. It can occur in as little as 10-15 minutes.

If your pets begin to experience symptoms of a heatstroke, SPCA says to move them to a cool and shaded area, offer fresh water and use cool water or damp towels to gradually lower their body temperature. It is then recommended to take your dog or cat directly to an emergency veterinary clinic.

Symptoms of heatstroke in pets:

  • Excessive panting

  • Drooling
