AUSTIN, Texas -- It's a simple question, that oftentimes is blown off, but on Tuesday it is being used to bring awareness to mental health.

  • Artist who created mural was born on January 22
  • Birthday is now known as "Hi, How Are You Day"
  • "Hi, How are You Project" encourages people to end mental health stigma

The phrase, “Hi, how are you,” first appeared on a mural in Central Austin.

The man behind the iconic Austin mural of the same name, Daniel Johnston, was born on January 22, 1961. Those who know him well are familiar with his mental illness. That's why his birthday, since 2018, has been designated as "Hi, How Are You Day".

The "Hi, How are You Project" and the City of Austin set the day aside in honor of Johnston and to encourage people to end the stigma on talking about mental health. It doesn't have to involve seeking a professional; it could be as simple as checking on a friend, loved one, or even a stranger.

"We thought 'Hi, How Are You' was this perfect conversation starter, four little words that can have such a big impact. So, the 'Hi, How Are You' Project is all about changing the stigma, changing the conversation around mental health,” said Tom Gimbel of the "Hi, How Are You" Project.

It's only fitting to mark the day with a concert, for Johnston is also a musician. Tuesday evening, nine artists will perform at ACL's Moody Theatre to raise funds on mental health awareness. The lineup includes Gavin DeGraw, Flaming Lips and Bob Schneider.

Tickets are sold out but the concert will be livestreamed at hihowareyou.org
