  • Vehicle was found submerged in water

On December 8, the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting a couple missing from Martindale at 8:11 a.m.

Along with the deputies, the Martindale Volunteer Fire Department assisted with the search on Southeast River Road near Morrison Creek.

At 10:28 a.m. a Nissan matching the description of the couple’s car was found submerged in water. Less than 30 minutes later, the body of a woman was found downstream.

The woman’s husband was not found until the morning of December 9, 1.5 miles downstream from the couple’s vehicle.

The couple has been identified as Mark and Alisin Genfan. Spectrum News on Monday spoke with the couple's son, McCoy Genfan. He recalled the last moments he spent with them. He and his girlfriend placed ornaments on a Christmas tree with them. He also played his father's synthesizer and the two bonded over music.

Mark Genfan was well known in Austin for designing recording studios. The memories comfort McCoy Genfan because he never got to give his parents a proper goodbye.

"You hear about this, but how in the world could it be happening to me?" McCoy Genfan said.

McCoy Genfan noticed his parents hadn't come home Friday night. He figured they had spent the night at a friend's home. On Saturday morning, he called 911. Later on Saturday, Alisin Genfan's body was located. Mark Genfan's body was found Sunday.

"I have been processing things, taking things in slowly. I've had bursts of emotions where I break down and cry and can't move," McCoy Genfan said. "I'm just so happy that I have my family and friends that are so much of a support. It's on bad terms, but it's good to see family to be able to grieve and process this with them as opposed to myself."

McCoy Genfan is additionally taking comfort in the stories people tell him about his parents.

"I've had so many people that have said, 'Your father did this for me and we did this together and it was terrific,' and, 'I'm the person I am because of him.' Hearing those kind of words actually helps me free my emotions."
