SAN ANTONIO – The Northside American Federation of Teachers helped eligible residents become American citizens on Saturday.

  • Drive in partnership with Mexican Consulate and Texas chapter
  • More than 1 million residents eligible in Texas for citizenship
  • Immigration lawyers provided legal advice

The drive was held as a partnership with the local Mexican Consulate and Texas chapter of the American Federation of Labor.

More than 1 million permanent residents in Texas are eligible for citizenship according to Northside AFT. The organization hopes by offering these events more people would become interested in the citizenship process.

“This is important because we want to make sure that the community, that people who are legal permanent residents become U.S. citizens and really getting to know what civic participation is all about and also so they can vote,” an organizer said.

Residents received help filling out a citizenship application.

Immigration lawyers also provided guidance with legal advice.
