World AIDS Day began in 1988 when world health ministries called for social tolerance and greater awareness of HIV on the international stage.

Austin Public Health said that the day continues to be an important way to celebrate the extraordinary advances made in the battle against HIV and to remind Austin residents and people everywhere that more progress is needed. The organization wants to show recognition and solidarity with those living with HIV within the community and across the world.
