AUSTIN, Texas — With the holiday season getting underway, the Austin Police Department is warning drivers to be careful on roadways that are more crowded than usual.

  • In November and December of 2017, 18 people were killed in holiday crashes
  • AAA estimates 3.8 million Texas will be on the road this Thanksgiving 

Last year, between November and December, there were nearly three-thousand crashes overall 18 people were killed, and another 60 were seriously injured. There were also 756 DWI arrests.

"Our goal at the Austin Police Department is to make sure that everyone makes it home safe for the holidays,” Assistant Chief Justin Newsom said. “I would love to be standing here after the first of the year and say that we had no deaths on Austin roadways during the holiday times of Thanksgiving and Christmas. We can’t do that without you guys helping us out.”

AAA Texas is estimating around 3.8 million Texans will be driving this year for Thanksgiving.
