SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State University head football coach Everett Withers was dismissed on Sunday after three seasons with the Bobcats.
- Withswas 7-28 overall with Bobcats
- Chris Woods to coach last game
- Team produced academically, not on the field
Texas State University President Denise M. Trauth and Director of Athletics Larry Teis announced the dismissal.
Teis also announced Chris Woods would coach the Bobcats in their final game against Arkansas State on Saturday.
“We are thankful for his contributions to our program. His teams performed well academically and were heavily involved in the San Marcos community. But, we didn’t have the same type of success on the field. We were close several times this season, but we just didn’t win the games,” Teis said.
Named Texas State’s 19th head coach, Withers was dismissed after posting a 3-8 record this season and a 7-28 record in three years as head coach at Texas State.
“We did the right thing academically and off the field, but the Sun Belt Conference is a tough league,” Trauth said.
Woods came to Texas State in the current season as the defensive coordinator after serving on the coaching staffs at Oklahoma University for three years when the Sooners won three consecutive Big 12 championships and made two appearances in the College Football Playoff.
He is in his 25th coaching season, has served six seasons as a head coach, and 13 years as a defensive specialist and coordinator in his career.
