AUSTIN, Texas -- An organization continues to memorialize the homeless year after year.

Richard Troxell with House the Homeless said he began the tradition 26 years ago. He planted a tree at Lady Bird Lake to honor those who died in poverty.

On Sunday, dozens of people hung 140 tags on the tree with names of those who died in Austin this year. Troxell said he hopes it will catch the attention of those who pass it on the trail.

"It brings attention to the fact that these people really are living and dying. That there is a very real human cost to not solving the problem of homelessness," said Troxell.

Troxell's goal is to help advocate to fix the problem, so one day the memorial won't be needed.
