AUSTIN, Texas — Austin Water has less than a month to get the City Council answers about what led up to last month's citywide boil water notice.

  • City Council asked Austin Water to provide details on factors that led to Boil water notice
  • Utility officials laid out a timeline earlier this week, the council wants a more detailed report
  • The report is due back December 11.

Utility officials laid out a timeline for City Council earlier this week, but what city leaders unanimously supported Thursday goes far beyond the a bullet-point timeline.

It seeks to determine if the age of the city's three water treatment plants played any role, or if the technology used to treat water is adequate and appropriate.

It also asks Austin Water to show a 10-year history of the water it treats, since the utility says unusually murky water created the problem.

"Ultimately, this is a place that is prone to flooding,”  City Councilor Ellen Troxclair said. “If it can happen once, it can happen again. What are we doing to make sure we are never in this position again?"

Troxclair sponsored the resolution, and said she doesn't believe staff did enough to inform the public.

The report is due back December 11.
